Hurricane Gustav formed on August 25th, about 260 miles southeast of Part-au- Prince, Haiti and rapidly strengthened into a hurricane early on August 26th.
It is the second major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season and has had a major impact on New Orleans and the surrounding area following the disastrous impact of Hurricane Katrina 3 years earlier.

Former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee is helping lead an effort at the 2008 Republican National Convention aimed at assisting evacuees in the Gulf Coast region affected by Hurricane Gustav and those suffering from HIV and AIDS in developing countries.
