Toyota May Raise Prius, Luxury Vehicle Prices in Japan

By yiawsedgaiush on  From automotive-carsreview.blogspot.com
Jiji Press reported that Toyota Motor Corp. is considering raising prices in Japan of its Prius gasoline-electric hybrid car and luxury models, company officials said. The Japanese auto industry leader is expected to raise prices by one to 3 pct on average due to soaring costs of raw materials such as steel, informed sources said. The company is likely to make a final decision as early as August and start introducing new pricing by the end of this year, the sources said. It will be the first...Read Full Story

Chevrolet Volts capable of using Calif.'s HOV lane nearing production

By iria on  From tech-ex.net
GM is unleashing a pair of (naturally expensive) ads for its Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid at Super Bowl XLVI. Just one day later, on Feb. 6, the company will finally begin building a version that could drastically increase its desirability in the state of California. The Chevrolet Volt has not proven to be a huge seller. And GM may have already missed on thousands of sales in California by not making the original Volt meet the standards for white decal HOV lane entry in that state. The...Read Full Story

Consumers’ Favorites: Best Hybrid Cars

By syra on  From greenautozone.net
Hybrid cars combine internal combustion engines with electric motors for enhancing gas mileage or for increasing power through use of fused-propulsion system. Honda and Toyota are some of the most significant major players in hybrid space, but just about every other automobile manufacturing company is working on hybrid model. We have picked some of the best hybrid cars based on good performance and excellent gas mileage. There are so many advantages of having hybrid cars today. In fact, these...Read Full Story

HyEngine Converts Internal Combustion Engines to run on H2

HyEngine Over the past year I’ve exchanged a few emails with Jonas Grooten of HyEngine Solutions. Instead of working on fuel cells, HyEngine converts vehicles with internal combustion engines to run on hydrogen. Here is what Jonas Grooten had to say in his last email: “My colleague, Olivier Vanhaelen, asked me to give you an update about our projects. Our HyRacer project is currently finished. We have implemented our 1.6 L Honda engine into a Honda Civic, which can now drive completely...Read Full Story

Choice Of The Hybrid Electric Vehicle Battery Or Back In Time

By marketcars on  From market-cars.blogspot.com
By Dan Green Could you honestly say that you wish you could have a hybrid car with its hybrid electric vehicle battery, be it a hybrid electric gas or pneumatic or any other choice you can think of hybrid car? The point at the end of the day is not to have a hybrid car, the point is to have a vehicle that does not need any fossil fuels to run on, either way by electricity, or by charging up a hybrid electric vehicle battery for a charge but still uses fuel when required. How quickly things...Read Full Story

Cost Of Hybrid Car

By richard1110 on  From hybridvehicle-s.com
by jwinfred Hybrid Smugness Image by gumption I would love to meet the owner of this car – I’ll bet he / she has a rich sense of humor (and a heightened sense of consciousness). Using a vanity plate to comment on – and perhap explicitly acknowledge – the smugness that many of us hybrid owners / drivers sometimes feel is rich in irony. I also like the fact that the license plate frame says "Highlander" … leading me to wonder if the owner used to have a Toyota Highlander … and if so...Read Full Story

Parts of the Gasoline-Electric Hybrid Vehicles

By richard1110 on  From hybridvehicle-s.com
Parts of the Gasoline-Electric Hybrid Vehicles gasoline The typical gasoline powered car contains a combustion engine , fuel tank, and transmission, whereas with the gasoline- electric hybrid vehicle , it contains the following parts: Gasoline Engine. The engine of a hybrid car is relatively smaller than its gasoline-only counterpart. This is because of two reasons: (1) the car doesn’t require a big engine since there it uses another source of power, (2) a bigger engine means larger...Read Full Story

Fuel consumption

Current HEVs reduce petroleum consumption (compared to otherwise similar conventional vehicles) primarily by using three mechanisms:
a) Reducing wasted energy during idle/low output, generally by turning the ICE off;
b) Recapturing waste energy (i.e. regenerative braking);
c) reducing the size and power of the ICE engine, and hence inefficiencies from under-utilization, by using the better torque response of electric motors to compensate for the loss in peak power output from the smaller ICE.

Any combination of these three primary hybrid technologies may be used for different fuel usage, power, emissions, weight and cost profiles. The ICE in an HEV is smaller, lighter, and more efficient than the one in a conventional vehicle, because the combustion engine can be sized for slightly above average power demand rather than peak power demand.

A standard combustion engine is required to operate over a range of speed and power, yet its highest efficiency is in a narrow range of operation; in an HEV, the ICE operates within its range of highest efficiency. The power curve of electric motors is better suited to variable speeds and can provide substantially greater torque at low speeds compared with internal-combustion engines.

The greater fuel economy of HEVs has implication for reduced petroleum consumption and vehicle air pollution emissions worldwide

Durability

Reduced wear on the gasoline engine, particularly from idling with no load. Reduced wear on brakes from the regenerative braking system use.

Environmental impact

Reduced noise emissions resulting from substantial use of electric motor at low speeds, leading to roadway noise reduction and beneficial noise health effects( although road noise from tires and wind, the loudest noises at highway speeds fron the interior of most vehicles, are not affected by the hybrid design alone).

Note, however, that this is not always an advantage; for example, people who are blind or visually-impaired, and who rely on vehicle-noise while crossing streets, find it more difficult to do safely.

Reduced air pollution emissions due to lower fuel consumption, leading to improved human health with regard to respiratory and other illness. Pollution reduction in urban environments may be particularly significant due to elimination of idle-at-rest.

The purchase of hybrid electric cars qualifies for a federal income tax credit up to $3,400 on the purchaser's Federal income taxes.

The tax credit is to be phased out two calendar quarters after the manufacturer reaches 60,000 new cars sold in the following manner: it will be reduced to 50% ($1700) if delivered in either the third or fourth quarter after the threshold is reached, to 25% ($850) in the fifth and sixth quarters, and 0% thereafter.

This means that Toyota Prius tax benefits are rapidly disappearing.

Many states give additional tax credits to hybrid electric car buyers.
