Learn about gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles that use both gasoline powered internal combustion engines and electric motors
TOYOTA PRIUS vs HONDA CIVIC HYBRID - Saugus to Medford to Sommerville to Cambridge to Boston to Chestnut Hill to Saugus, Massachusetts
City driving is the bane of the efficiency-driven driver's existence. Frequent acceleration, deceleration, idling, and more acceleration more than overcome the benefits of low RPMs to provide you, today's unlucky loser, with terrible fuel economy.Example? How 'bout the Rolls-Royce Phantom, a vehicle of peerless engineering that happens to travel seven fewer miles per gallon in the city than in highway driving. What could be 18mpg turns into 7mpg. That sucks.
Isn't Hybrid Synergy Drive the answer? Toyota's popular and pious Prius is more efficient in the city. Not all hybrids answer the city's call. For instance, the Honda Civic Hybrid is 5mpg worse when driving in the city. Not only has Honda struggled to strengthen their hybrid popularity (the powerful Accord Hybrid was cancelled, remember) despite Honda inducing the genesis of gas-electric combinations.
It doesn't help that Honda wants more of your money for the privilege of hybrid ownership. The fuel efficiency comparison of these compatriots is below. Civic Hybrid owners ain't going to recoup any of the $1,100 MSRP disadvantage. Here's hoping (for Honda's sake) that the city fuel cost differential doesn't spread too wide.

1,011.85 - total cost, in USD at today's gas prices, for the owner of a Honda Civic Hybrid to travel from Saugus to Medford, Cambridge, Boston, Chestnut Hill and back to Saugus five times a week, 49 weeks per year-----
Toyota didn't reinvent the wheel when the Prius was developed; debuted; and then released to the public. However, the Prius is one spectacularly efficient vehicle in city driving. Check out the real-life test track driving with a Prius and BMW M3 to discover how the Prius reacts when driven hard.
It's somewhat surprising to discover that, even with the knowledge of the Prius's reputation, 42.8 miles of city driving costs just $3.38 with gas priced at $3.75. Also somewhat surprising is the realization that 10,486 miles of city driving costs the Civic Hybrid owner only $15.31 extra each month.
