Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Cars

Hydrogen fuel-cell is not a new idea. The concept was first proposed by a German scientist in 1838. The idea is to use hydrogen as fuel and oxygen as oxidant to produce energy. There are a lot of different forms of fuel cell and are used in different context. For instance, NASA's spaceships, they use fuel cells.
However, if you wanna put that into a car, that is another story. Although Hydrogen fuel cell car is considered as the ultimate longer-term alternative to today's conventional fossil-fueled car, as it only requires hydrogen as the fuel, it is not a very easy thing to do in reality. There are a range of limitation to its development from various sources.

First, technology. Yes, as you know, this is still not a very popular sources of energy because it is not easy to store and the technique is immature. But luckily, we got the crazy Japanese working on it. Toyota just developed an improved version of hydrogen fuel cell. It allows the vehicle to run for 830 km on a single tank of hydrogen and in temperatures as low as 30 degrees Celsius below freezing, with a maximum speed of 155 km per hour (97 mph). Well, the speed doesn't sound reli impressive to me, but is good enough for daily use. Anyway it is glad to see improvement and for more information, check this out.

Second limitation to the development of such cell, is money. It is very expensive to develop such fuel cell technology. Plus the fact that there ain't many fuelling station out there, which makes investing on such development risky. This restricts the proliferation of fuel cell.

Thirdly, is it reli good for the environment? When you use hydrogen fuel cell, there is no emission. However, that doesn't mean it causes no damage to the environment. Because, think about it, Hydrogen itself is NOT able to produce energy, it carries energy. Like an AA battery, you need to charge it, and that is the problem. If you use energy derived from the combustion of fossil fuel to charge the Hydrogen fuel cell, there is no difference to having a fossil fuel car. Therefore, these Hydrogen fuel cell cars will be completely environmental friendly when they are charged by sustainable energy such as solar, wind and hydroelectric energy.

Without further ado, lets check out some cars

The Scorpion by Ronn Motors

A sports car with an onboard hydrogen generator. This car is reli cool indeed, however it burns both gasoline and hydrogen, not completely zero emission yet~~

Honda - FCX Clarity

Doesn't look very good to me, like a bloody sponge!

GM - Chevrolet Fuel Cell Volt

This is a bit better, could do better. But still, I wouldn't drive this

FCHV Toyota

OMG, this is ugly as hell.

Guys, you reli need to put some effort on the design.
I think if the design of these cars are reli reli cool, it would be much easier to get more people to use Hydrogen fuel cell car!
