Farmers' markets are an amazing resource. Fresh produce, meats, dairy, often raised without pesticides or even organic, and definitely more energy efficient than buying food that has been shipped across the country or across the ocean. A lot of the time, you can speak with the people who actually grow your food to learn about the many varieties only available through these markets. Since the items are seasonal, it is a constantly changing pallette of colors, tastes and scents, and an unending inspiration for fresh home-cooked cuisine.

I love my local farmers market. It's so cool to have access to incredibly fresh, locally produced, often organic or pesticide-free produce. My market also features dairy farms, meat producers, a mushroom farm, bakers and more. There is nothing like an abundance of fresh produce in getting my creative cooking juices flowing. This past weekend, I stopped by my local farmers market and was inspired by the huge variety of fruits and vegetables – it is the peak of the season here in the DC area. Every week, I let the landscape of the farmers market lead me to my weekend menu. This weekend ... Read Full Story

The harvest holiday is upon us. While Thanksgiving makes for a great opportunity to enjoy good food and good wine(s) with friends and family, it also marks the end, at least in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states, of growing season. Sadly, that means that today was the last day for my local farmers market. On this Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the Oakmont Farmers Market celebrated the finale of a successful first year. I made sure to take advantage of one last opportunity to pick up some fresh fruit and veggies, as well as to stock the freezer with a few cuts of naturally raised buffalo ... Read Full Story

Floods in the South of France in 2002. Drought and extreme heat throughout Western Europe in 2003. Mudslides in the Napa Valley in 2006. Hail in Chester County in 2008? Real wine should be little more than an expression of nature. However, as important as nature is in contributing to the creation of great wine, it can also present some of the greatest risks faced by any winegrower, any farmer. This year’s most widespread natural “act of god” seems to be hail. I won’t even try to explain the meteorology behind it (for that, we have subject matter experts ). In the last two ... There's been a tremendous explosion in the spread and popularity of the "Buy Fresh, Buy Local" credo in the Philadelphia area over the last few years. One need look no further than this year's schedule of markets organized by The Food Trust and Farm to City to get a sense of just how much great stuff is out there. As much as I love my local market , it's hard to deny that the area's most vibrant, thriving and diverse center for regional growers -- and local shoppers -- must be The Headhouse Farmers Market . Last Sunday, I finally made it down to ... Read Full Story

Ah, Spring. Among other things of beauty, it brings the return of fresh local produce along with the farmers who grow it. To my undying happiness, after a long winter of relying on the local supermarkets for produce, my local neigborhood source has returned. The Oakmont Farmers Market celebrated opening day on Wednesday, May 21. Crunched for time -- I was teaching a class on Loire Valley wines a few hours after the market's opening bell rang -- I was only able to make a quick run of it, snapping a few pictures and picking up a small supply of fruit, vegetables and eggs. ...
