Farmers' markets are an amazing resource. Fresh produce, meats, dairy, often raised without pesticides or even organic, and definitely more energy efficient than buying food that has been shipped across the country or across the ocean. A lot of the time, you can speak with the people who actually grow your food to learn about the many varieties only available through these markets. Since the items are seasonal, it is a constantly changing pallette of colors, tastes and scents, and an unending inspiration for fresh home-cooked cuisine.
The harvest holiday is upon us. While Thanksgiving makes for a great opportunity to enjoy good food and good wine(s) with friends and family, it also marks the end, at least in the mid-Atlantic and northeastern states, of growing season. Sadly, that means that today was the last day for my local farmers market. On this Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the Oakmont Farmers Market celebrated the finale of a successful first year. I made sure to take advantage of one last opportunity to pick up...

I love my local farmers market. It's so cool to have access to incredibly fresh, locally produced, often organic or pesticide-free produce. Now certainly reaching the end of their long run this year, I was surprised to find a fairly broad selection of tomatoes still at this week’s market. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised though, after the intensity of flavor in the...

Ah, Spring. Among other things of beauty, it brings the return of fresh local produce along with the farmers who grow it. To my undying happiness, after a long winter of relying on the local supermarkets for produce, my local neigborhood source has returned. The Oakmont Farmers Market celebrated opening day on Wednesday, May 21. Crunched for time -- I was teaching a class on Loire Valley wines a few hours after the market's opening bell rang -- I was only able to make a quick run of it...

This one’s for my fellow citizens of the Keystone State. The Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) has put together a brief survey intended to help them collect ideas as to how to build closer ties between food consumers and their local farming communities. If you currently shop at a local farmers market or if you don’t but would like to, please take a few moments to complete their survey. It should be time well spent and will hopefully serve to help strengthen the...

With the growing concern about produce quality in the back of the consumer's mind, farmers markets, like the one held on the Paxton Town Common every Friday, are not only a reliable source for high quality fresh produce, but also a haven for local character.
