Ichiro stretches hit streak to 27 games

Japan's Ichiro Suzuki extended his consecutive game hit streak to 27 games on Wednesday, extending his Seattle Mariners club record in the third inning against the Baltimore Orioles with a single.

Suzuki smacked the ball into right field to stretch the Major League Baseball streak, putting him three shy of Washington's Ryan Zimmerman for this year's longest hit streak in the major leagues. Zimmerman's run ended May 12.

The single off Brad Bergesen lifted Suzuki's batting average during the run to .402, 47 hits in 117 times at bat. This marks the seventh time Ichiro has hit safely in 20 or more games in a row since arriving to the US club in 2001.

Pete Rose, Ty Cobb and Willie Keeler each share the major league record with eight hit streaks of at least 20 games.

Joe DiMaggio set the all-time major league hit streak record of 56 games in 1941.
