Idi Amin Dada was the President of Uganda. During Idi Amin Dada's presidency, there was an increase in sectarian violence, including the persecution of the Acholi, Lango, Indian and other ethnic groups, as well as Hindus and Christians in Uganda.
The death toll during Amin's regime will never be accurately known. An estimate from the International Commission of Jurists is that it was not less than 80,000 and more likely around 300,000.
The political career of Idi Amin inspired a Hollywood movie, The Last King of Scotland.
BUZZFLASH GUEST COMMENTARYby Nikolas KozloffHaving survived a U.S.-supported coup d'état in 2002 that briefly removed him from power, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has sought to encourage solidarity amongst impoverished nations in an effort to counter Washington's hegemonic and imperial designs throughout Latin America and around the world. That impulse is certainly understandable, but Chávez has now gone so far overboard that he has lost...
About a decade ago, I picked up a copy of John Follain’s
wonderfully entertaining potboiler
Jackal: The Complete Story of the Legendary Terrorist, Carlos
the Jackal, a precise catalog of the brutal murders and
pointless “commando operations” masterminded by the former
Venezuelan revolutionary. Even by the standards of 1970s terror
groups—think the PFLP, Red Brigades, RAF—Carlos’s brutality stood
out. But as he withers away...
Fresh from defending Carlos the Jackal Hugo Chavez managed to upset Ugandans on Sunday by claiming that Idi Amin was not as brutal as everyone made him out to be.
Ugandans do not take kindly to being told, by a president of a country thousands of miles away, that Idi Amin was a great man after all.[Update: Not that present-day Uganda doesn't have its problems...]
As we head towards the thirteen day remembrance of the Cuban Missile Crisis in the "As Seen On TV" gallery, I'm feeling a bit in the international mood. (I usually feel that way, but more towards the International House of Pancakes frame of mind....)And since today marks the anniversary of Uganda becoming an independent Commonwealth realm in 1962, who better to feature in the showcase but Idi Amin?Okay, I'm sure there could have been plenty of...
Read more here . We also remember Bishop Janani Luwum, who's martyrdom set off a revival that continues to this day in Uganda. He was buried at his home village of Mucwini in the Kitgum District . He is recognised as a martyr by the Church of England and his death is commemorated on 17 February as a Lesser Festival . His statue is among the Twentieth Century Martyrs ...

Ugandan officials say they are offended that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has praised former dictator Idi Amin. Officials including President Yoweri Museveni's secretary Tamale Mirundi say Amin ruled brutally in the 1970s. Chavez on Friday called the East African dictator a nationalist and a patriot. Mirundi countered on Sunday with Amin's record of torturing and killing opponents — including one of his wives. James Kizza Baliruno said he was offended by the praise as Amin's soldiers killed both of his parents in front of him when he was 4 years old. Ugandan officials did not say whether they would take any action. Venezuela has ...

Nearly two decades after he arrived in this country, Ugandan Derreck Kayongo is still bowled over by one subtle display of American wealth: the endless array of soaps available in stores. In his African homeland, the cost of soap is out of reach for many, often with tragic consequences. In 2004, the World Health Organization found roughly 15 percent of deaths among Ugandan children under age 5 resulted from diarrheal diseases, many of which could be prevented through hand sanitation. Now America's bountiful soap bars have prompted Kayongo to launch the Global Soap Project, an effort to help his country's poorest — one used ...

ARMY MISSING IN ACTION AT MIGINGO ISLAND By Ng'ang'a MbuguaPosted Sunday, February 22 2009 at 19:40 Once, when Kenya tta was President, I heard it said that Ugandan soldiers attacked a border post with Kenya. According to this legend, Kenyatta ordered that soldiers be given police uniforms. Those were the days police wore khaki. Dressed as police, the soldiers were quickly deployed to the troubled border post and fought the Uganda army, winning the encounter that must have put paid to Dictator Idi Amin’s imperialist plans. At the time, Amin, who was trained as a soldier at the Lanet Barracks in Nakuru, 156km west ...
