Pseudorealism is one of the emerging 21st century genre of visual art. Its main proponent, Indian artist Devajyoti Ray has for long been a one man champion of this new style. Others who had toyed with the idea have never been as consistent as Ray. Commercial considerations have kept most other artists to do a variety of works alongside Pseudorealist paintings. But Ray had been different. Since 2005, Ray had started keeping his own other works completely out of view to give prominence to his new genre.
Like any new ism, Pseudorealism too took time to germinate and Ray had patiently waited all these years for the style to adopted by the new generation of artists in India and elsewhere. He had been visiting art colleges, galleries, and artists' groups to propagate his ideas all these years. Slowly but steadily now he has developed a following and the ism is gradually turning into a movement in India. Critics and writers had always been supportive to Ray, but it was the mass media and the student community that needed to awakened. This is happening now.
Ray is holding now a show in New Delhi of his recent works. But more important than the works themselves, the show is also to highlight the history of Pseudorealism, its growth and its maturity into an ideal 21st century art genre. The Show will be introduced by AR Raju, one of India's important art critics, and former director of Travancore Gallery.
Rajendra, editor of India's finest art journals The Contemporary Art Journal, says, "Pseudorealism is not just a style, or a genre. It is a movement. It shows how reality can viewe and created through abstarct concepts." Rajendra is now writing an anthology on Pseudorealism, and an introductory write up of the same will be available at the show.
Ray's show will be very keenly observed, as art lovers, investors and whole of India's art market is going to take cues from the success of this one single show.
