The Republic of India, commonly known as India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous, secular liberal democracy in the world. India has a coastline of over seven thousand kilometres, bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east. India borders Pakistan to the west; the People's Republic of China, Nepal and Bhutan to the north-east; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia.
The name India is derived from Indus, which is derived from the Old Persian word Hindu, from Sanskrit Sindhu, the historic local appellation for the Indus River. The ancient Greeks referred to the ancient Indians as Indoi, the people of the Indus. The Constitution of India and common usage in Hindi also recognise Bharat as an official name of equal status. A third name, Hindustan (Persian: Land of the Hindus), has been in use since the 12th century, though its contemporary use is unevenly applied.

The Bharatiya Janata Party came down on National Conference President Omar Abdullah on Wednesday for his utterances during the trust vote debate in Parliament and blamed the United Progressive Alliance government for subverting the Shrine Board Act to revoke the state cabinet's Amarnath land transfer order.
"Abdullah who is for greater autonomy for Kashmir, his party's core constituency, has once again poured venom on Indians by shamelessly shouting in Parliament that Muslims are fighting for their land," BJP state committee vice-president and spokesman Hari Om said.
"They will continue to resist land transfer to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board for creating facilities for pilgrims even at a future date," Om said, adding the thunderous applause from treasury benches to Abdullah's stand on the land issue proves the government backed the order's cancellation.
Dubbing Abdullah as a "Jinnah" and Congress as "highly communal," he said the central government, the minority government in the state and Governor N N Vohra were "conspiring to vitiate the holy yatra and appease the interests of Kashmiri separatists." The NC and the People's Democratic Party are Kashmir based outfits that will never change their attitude towards the Indian nation, the BJP spokesperson said.
