The Republic of India, commonly known as India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous, secular liberal democracy in the world. India has a coastline of over seven thousand kilometres, bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east. India borders Pakistan to the west; the People's Republic of China, Nepal and Bhutan to the north-east; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, Maldives and Indonesia.

The name India is derived from Indus, which is derived from the Old Persian word Hindu, from Sanskrit Sindhu, the historic local appellation for the Indus River. The ancient Greeks referred to the ancient Indians as Indoi, the people of the Indus. The Constitution of India and common usage in Hindi also recognise Bharat as an official name of equal status. A third name, Hindustan (Persian: Land of the Hindus), has been in use since the 12th century, though its contemporary use is unevenly applied.

Law Minister Veerappa Moily said the report "indicted" 68 people for their roles in the razing of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya in northern India. "The procedure for dealing with this kind of report is to focus on its recommendations ... Read Full Story

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members repeatedly shouted down the speaker over newspaper claims that an official inquiry into the Babri Mosque's demolition "indicted" the party's leaders. The Indian Express newspaper also claimed the probe, which will be published shortly, concluded that the 1992 attack on the Muslim shrine by hordes of Hindu zealots was "meticulously planned." Home Minister P. Chidambaram said that the report should not be judged until it was published finally later ... Read Full Story

WASHINGTON: India has enduring civilizational links with Afghanistan. India will continue to assist Afghanistan in building its institutions and its human resources. With these two sentences, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday threw down the gauntlet to Washington, Islamabad and perhaps even Beijing and other world capitals that India would not be budged from pursuing its interests in Afghanistan — primarily of preventing the country from turning toxic under Pakistan’s malignant influence and American uncertainty. He said we are ready to settle all disputes with Pakistan including Jammu and Kashmir row. “The road to peace on Afghanistan will be long and hard. But given ... Read Full Story
