A Quality IVF Procedure - Are You Aware Of The Method?

An IVF procedure consists of several stages which take place over a period of 4 to 6 weeks and begins with fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation. Blood tests and ultrasound scans are done to monitor progress. If ovulation is successful, eggs are then collected, along with sperm, and the eggs are then fertilized. The next stage involves transferring one or two embryos to the uterus. The cycle ends with a pregnancy test, and if that is negative, the ivf procedure begins again.

There are two more treatments, which are helpful for women who have certain conditions of the cervix. The first is gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), a procedure in which the eggs and sperm are inserted together in the fallopian tube using laparoscopy. Another option, during which the eggs are fertilized in a lab, is Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT). These treatments are more costly than IVF since they require surgery, and the side effects are the same.

Many couples struggle with getting pregnant, and therefore choose infertility treatment. After trying to conceive for a year or more, a medical evaluation may reveal the source of infertility. Infertility evaluation should be sought after only six months of trying once a couple has reached their 30s. It's not always clear why a couple struggles to conceive.

For the couple having trouble conceiving for no apparent reason, the first type of treatment prescribed is often artificial insemination. Husbands and wives experience a 15% success rate per cycle using IUI with fertility drugs. The sperm are almost always treated in a lab, so as to decrease any chance of infection, and improve the chances of an egg being fertilized. The medical professional places the sperm in the uterus around the time the woman ovulates.

Almost 25% of cases of infertility can be traced to difficulties with ovulation. But irregular ovulation is something that can be treated, and medications such as Clomid are effective at ovarian stimulation. If ovulation still doesn't occur then gonadotropins should be the next step and should result in the release of some eggs. A pregnancy carrying more than one embryo may occur with the use of these drugs, in which case your doctor will explain your options.

What is the link between infertility treatment and cerebral palsy? According to new research children born with the help of infertility treatment are more likely to have cerebral palsy. The journal Human Reproduction featured a study which found that children born through assisted reproduction had double the likelihood of cerebral palsy as their naturally born counterparts. The higher rates of pre term delivery and multiple births ( twins or triplets make up about 1/2 of all assisted reproduction births) among this group, is believed to be the cause for the increased risk.

In vitro fertilization, or IVF, is a process whereby an egg is fertilized in the lab and the eggs are then implanted in a woman's uterus to continue to develop. For this treatment, just before the woman ovulates, the eggs are taken via a needle from the ovary. As with ovulation drugs and other procedures, a well-known side effect of IVF is multiple fetuses.

While many infertile husbands and wives are utilizing high-tech medical treatments such as IVF or IUI, a growing number of people are looking to natural or alternative health care solutions for reproduction assistance. There are many natural ways to improve your chances of conceiving, including diet, exercise, acupuncture, and yoga. Considering the cost of traditional medical infertility treatment, the invasive and painful nature of many of the procedures, and most importantly, the risks involved, it’s highly advisable to try all possible natural options first.
