The facts relating to car hire excess insurance

When you rent a car, are you really sure that you completely understand what your liabilities are and more specifically, where it relates to your policy for car hire excess insurance?

My rental deal includes insurance

Yes, it may do but note:
- if you're renting in the USA and a few other countries, it may not do and you'll need to purchase the insurance separately:
- in any country the basic in price of car hire insurance could contain excess and other conditions, meaning that you are liable if there is an accident - for as much as £1600 or more. This is true if you have the  insurance offered by the rental company.

What is this excess charge and what are the exclusions?

In order to protect yourself from the costs of damages to a rental company's car, you purchase Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) insurance.

However, the typical in- the- deal CDW contains two important points:
- it will contain an excess which means you'll have to pay a specified amount as the first part of any claim - in some cases that may be £1600 or more that will be charged to your credit card:
- a typical rental company CDW policy will exclude damage to the windows, wheels, tyres, undercarriage and possibly roof - damage any of those and you'll have to pay.

Is there anything I can do about it?

Well, you may find yourself facing one of three options:
- you can do nothing and just hope that you never have an accident:
- you can buy extra top- up insurance that your rental company offers in order to cover the risk areas mentioned above
- you can to online and buy car hire excess insurance coverage

What are the differences?

Ignore the option to just trust to your luck. Buying insurance from an online specialist provider means that you might be able to claim back charges for excess and other charges that you may have gotten from the hire company.

It may be more cost effective to go with this option rather than paying your car rental company more money to remove the excess and other charges.

You may also find that the specialists' policies provide additional cover such as personal accident, baggage cover and lost keys protection etc.

Only you can really decide whether car hire excess insurance is for you. If you do, it may be worth looking at the options available from the specialist online providers of car insurance. Do also note that as with any insurance product, terms and conditions, exclusions and limitations will apply and you may wish to read these carefully to ensure you understand them.
