Abkhazia says Nauru recognizes its independence

Georgia's breakaway province of Abkhazia on Tuesday won recognition by the South Pacific island nation of Nauru, one of the world's smallest states. Russia recognized Abkhazia and another Georgian separatist province of South Ossetia as independent states after the August 2008 war between Russia and Georgia. Bodybuilder Turchinsky dead at 46

MOSCOW, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Russian bodybuilder, television personality and actor Vladimir Turchinsky has died of a heart attack at the age of 46, his family said Thursday. Russian media reported steroids may have played a role in the death of the head of the Russian Federation of Extreme Sports. Over 100 people were killed overnight when fireworks set ablaze a middle-class restaurant in the Russian Ural city of Perm, as officials Saturday ruled out the possibility of a terrorist attack. Russian official: arms deal with US this month

A top Kremlin official is telling Russian news agencies that Moscow and Washington expect to strike a new nuclear arms treaty this month. The START I treaty signed in 1991 expired Friday.
