After a major outcry among Internet Explorer users, Microsoft has pulled a controversial commercial from circulation. The ad was for the computing giant's "Internet Explorer 8" web browser. The most offensive feature of this particular commercial (of a series), is a woman that vomits several times. (Quite gross really... WTH?)
The ad stars well-known Superman actor Dean Cain, who diagnoses the woman's problem as "Oh My God, I'm Gonna Puke" (O.M.G.I.G.P) syndrome. The reason behind the woman 'puking', is the discovery of apparent hardcore pornography on her husband's computer... her husband slips over on the vomit, at which time she continues to vomit on top of him.
According to actor Cain, "none of this would have happened if the man had used Internet Explorer 8" - which comes with a built-in feature called "InPrivate Browsing"... the feature allows users to browse the internet without leaving a trace.
This is where the real controversy starts - many people believe that the ad could be seen by some as Microsoft offering tips on how to browse inappropriate (or even illegal) online content without getting caught by a spouse.
The ad is one of a series of four IE8 commercials that all featuring Cain as the public service announcer - the others include "S.H.Y.N.E.S.S." (Sharing Heavily Yet Not Enough Sharing Still), "F.O.M.S" (Fear Of Missing Something) and "G.R.I.P.E.S" (Gripping Rage Internet Pathetically Extra Slow'). All were directed by comedian Bob (Bobcat) Goldthwait of Police Acadamy fame.
"I think they were trying to do something that was a little less mainstream, and I think that's (what led to) my involvement," Goldthwait said.
According to a Microsoft spokesperson, "While much of the feedback to this particular piece of creative was positive, some of our customers found it offensive, so we have removed it".
