The united States is spending a billion dollars per day to maintain troops on the ground in Iraq, and losing lives daily. This wikizine is a place to discuss the troop surge strategy, mark progress, and share ideas about the war.

The University of Kentucky is seeing its own "troop surge" among veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. Veterans' enrollment is rising at UK and the University of Louisville so much so that they, like colleges across the country, have set up student centers just for veterans and dedicated resources to smoothing the way for incoming students. Anthony Dotson, coordinator of UK's Veterans Resource Center, said his office was set up in...

Over the past several months, John McCain and his backers have touted his early endorsement of the Iraq War “surge” as evidence of his political courage, but it could be equally viewed as an act of political desperation, to forestall total calamity in Iraq and to avert disaster for broader neoconservative objectives in the Middle East. McCain’s endorsement of the “surge” in January 2007 also represented a repudiation of his previous support for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s concept of using a light force of mobile U.S. troops, backed by technology and air power, to win the war. McCain now presents himself as a persistent ... Read Full Story

In an article on ipsnews.net , journalist and investigative historian Gareth Porter analyzed the final draft of the US Iraq Status of Forces Agreement on the US military presence in Iraq. He states that the agreement “represents an even more crushing defeat for the policy of the George W. Bush administration than previously thought.” The deal not only calls for a clear deadline for a withdrawal of combat troops by 2011, it will also be unlikely the a residual non-combat force of US Troops would be allowed to remain in Iraq for training and support purposes. Porter also states: “The clearest sign of the ... Read Full Story
