Two-time defending World Marathon Majors champion Irina Mikitenko has been lined up for this month's Great Australian Run, organisers said on Wednesday. The 37-year-old German, who has won last two London Marathons, joins men's Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiru in the 15-kilometre (nine-mile) race around Melbourne on November 29. Mikitenko was crowned winner of the World Marathon Majors -- an annual event encompassing the five most prestigious races -- for the second consecutive time in New York this month. In 2008, she ran the fourth fastest marathon in history when she clocked a winning time of two hours, 19 minutes and 19 seconds in Berlin. Read Full Story

Germany's Irina Mikitenko, the gold medal favourite for the women's marathon at next week's world championships, withdrew from the event on Saturday following the death of her father. The 36-year-old said she was in no condition to prepare for the championships just two weeks after her father passed away. "Irina was nowhere near the level of form she had hoped for during her training camp at St Moritz," said German athletics technical director Jurgen Mallow.
