A community portal about Irritable bowel syndrome with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: In gastroenterology, irritable bowel syndrome or spastic colon is a functional bowel disorder characterized by abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits which are not associated with any abnormalities seen on routine clinical testing. It is fairly common and makes up 20–50% of visits to gastroenterologists. Lower abdominal pain, and bloating associated with alteration of bowel habits and abdominal discomfort relieved with defecation are the most frequent symptoms. The abdominal pain type is usually described in a patient as either diarrhea -predominant, constipation -predominant or IBS with alternating stool pattern. In some individuals, IBS may have an acute onset and develop after an infectious illness characterised by two or more of the following: fever, vomiting, acute diarrhea, positive stool culture. This post-infective syndrome has consequently been termed "post-infectious IBS" and is acute onset Rome II criteria positive. This condition is more homogenous, being mostly IBS-D and is drawing much clinical investigation.

In gastroenterology, irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS ) is a functional bowel disorder characterized by mild to severe abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and alteration of bowel habits. In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements.[1] Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate (classified as IBS-D, IBS-C or IBS-A, respectively). IBS may begin after an infection (post-infectious, IBS-PI) or a stressful life event. Other functional or pain disorders and certain psychological conditions are more common in those with IBS. Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments which attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions. ... Read Full Story

Diverticulitis is a common digestive disease particularly found in the large intestine. Diverticulitis develops from diverticulosis, which involves the formation of pouches (diverticula) on the outside of the colon. Diverticulitis results if one of these diverticula becomes inflamed. Causes The development of colonic diverticulum is thought to be a result of raised intraluminal colonic pressures. The Sigmoid colon has the smallest diameter of any portion of the colon, and therefore the portion which would be expected to have the highest intraluminal pressure. The postulate that a lack of dietary fiber, particularly non-soluble fiber predisposes individuals to diverticular disease is supported within the medical literature. ... Read Full Story
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should immediately increase its warnings about the use of lubiprostone — available as Amitiza — because of serious adverse reactions, including the risk of abortion or premature labor if given to pregnant women, Public Citizen said in a petition filed today with the agency. The warning labels on lubiprostone, which is prescribed for the treatment of chronic constipation in adults and irritable bowel syndrome in women, are completely inadequate, the petition says: Even in controlled clinical trials, where women were instructed to be on two methods of contraception, six women became pregnant. Lubiprostone is in the same class ... Read Full Story
