Released in 1969, Hot Buttered Soul was my introduction to Isaac Hayes' greatness! I was introduced to this record by my father, and it is a deep one! What I like most about Hot Buttered Soul is the raw funk!

Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic just smashes you in the face with that goodness, while the funk of Walk On By kinda sneaks up on you. Despite By the Time I Get to Phoenix being the longest song I have ever heard (18:46), it has a deep message. Most people's interpretations are different, but what I drew from the song is that Mr. Hayes was in search of peace of mind...

Isaac Hayes was born August 20, 1942. Before he put the S in Shaft, he put the S in Stax as an accomplished composer, songwriter, producer and eventually he became a performer. My favorite Isaac Hayes performance was in the film Wattstax, a historic concert hosted by Richard Pryor. The film showcased the talented roster of Stax Records, and was raw, uncut and hella funky!

On August 10, 2008 Isaac Hayes suffered a deadly stroke and left us way too soon. He leaves behind him a legacy rooted in music, film and television (South Park) that is untouched. His determination, grace and courage during the Civil Rights era, specifically segregation, are an even larger testament to his legacy. In celebration of Black History Month, I would like to start by honoring Mr. Isaac Hayes, one of the illest to ever lead a band!
