FILM NEWS: IDA AWARDS 2008

Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega's La Corona takes Best Short Documentary

La Corona of Documentaries

By John Esther

Last night before a full crowd -- including actors Danny Glover and Adrian Grenier (Entourage) plus documentarian Kirby Dick (This Film is Not Yet Rated) -- at the Directors Guild of America the International Documentary Association’s 2008 IDA Awards were handed out.

Hosted well by a “vodka” drinking Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me; Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?) winners included previously Short Documentary Oscar nominees Amanda Micheli and Isabel Vega’s La Corona for Best Short Documentary while there was a tie between Jim Marsh’s Man on Wire and Ari Folman’s Waltz with Bashir for Best Documentary.

Other recipients included Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man), who, during his acceptance speech for Career Achievement Award sounded as brilliant, wrongheaded and typically suspicious as his documentaries and previous tales of the galore, and Preservation and Scholarship Award winner, 67-year-old Marina Goldovskayaat (Lucky to be Born in Russia), who said she wanted to make documentaries for another 30 years.

Winners of the film will screen throughout Saturday at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.
