A 43-year-old man who underwent Spain's first facial transplant was making very good progress Friday, the surgeon who conducted the operation said. "The patient is doing very very well. But we have to be careful," Pedro Cavadas said." The man received a new face from a 35-year-old man who died in a traffic accident in Wednesday's operation at the Hospital La Fe in the eastern city of Valencia which lasted 15 and a half hours. Hospital officials say Spain's first face transplant patient — the first anywhere to get a new tongue and jaw — has been so pleased by his new appearance that he smiled. Surgeon Pedro Cavadas says the 43-year-old man, who underwent the surgery Tuesday at La Fe hospital in the eastern city of Valencia, may go home in about a week. The man lost part of his face more than 10 years ago due to radiotherapy. Isabelle Dinoire, from Valenciennes, northern France, was the recipient of ground breaking face transplant surgery in November 2005 after her face was badly mauled by her pet Labrador.
