My articles focus on issues in relation to retention and graduation rates in today's colleges and universities. I am advocating for the young people who are facing the challenge of entering an institution of higher learning underprepared for the level of coursework and the commitment necessary to complete the required courses to graduate.
I have to acknowledge that while I have addressed educational concerns on this site, this is not a typical post for Roundhouse Rhetoric . But I didn't write this for Roundhouse Rhetoric . I wrote this for Compspot as a follow up to a teaching workshop I conducted on Friday about using blogs in the classroom. For those who are not interested in teaching writing, but who are interested in blog-promotion tactics, this post does offer something for you. It addresses how to increase a blog's... W ith thanks to my South African correspondent for the following amazing perspective on the relative size (rather than the size of our relatives) of Earth and our planetary cousins. The first image shows that in a straight fight with either Venus, Mars, Mercury or Pluto, Earth would be a clear winner: - However, if any of the other planets look as though they may want to join in, the following image shows that it would be wise for Earth to either through in the figurative "planetary towel... I have a near and dear relative who is the Head of a Mathematics Department in a secondary school in the UK. I had a lengthy discussion with her today about the state of education in England, in particular, her current school which I would like to share with you. It might help to put my views into context if I tell you a little bit about the environment I was raised in. My parents were not rich, worked hard in back-breaking manual jobs and tried to turn 2 pence into 10 in order to feed and... Read Full Story
I don't know if it's just me, but lately I've been feeling more and more frustrated with college, with schooling, and with the entire education system, not only in this country, but worldwide. It seems like nowadays (or maybe always, I can't really ascertain for myself) the "people telling you what to do" system of living has managed to get it's greedy paws on just about everything, especially when it comes to education. From the time I was little, I remember learning about how I should... Read Full Story
“All The News You Never Knew You Needed To Know …Until Now.” In The News: Everyone’s reminiscing about Potemkin Village. President Bush visits Iraq… specifically, the most secure airbase in Iraq. 17 miles in diameter and home to 10,000 U.S. Marines. But the comparison is to Potemkin’s ruse IS striking: The village : From Wikipedia Potemkin villages were, purportedly, fake settlements erected at the direction of Russian minister Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin to fool Empress Catherine II... Amazing: scientific studies recently published in “Scientific American” are just beginning to acknowledge the importance of the body, in particular, body memory that prompts cognition. DUH. CRINGE. Obviously, these brain researchers have no background in the arts and never bothered to give any credence to either child development studies or to the amount of literature and art research concerning the role of movement in therapy, education, articulation, etc. I’m sure any artist still working... Why would anyone trust Washington Mutual's disgraced CEO on education issues ? By DAVID MARSHAK GUEST COLUMNIST Kerry Killinger, the CEO of Washington Mutual, has led Washington Mutual into a debacle: billions of dollars lost already and perhaps $19 billion in new losses to come, thousands of employees fired, a stock value in the basement and now a partial buyout on the cheap by a Texas firm. Killinger also initially changed the 2008 bonus plan for himself and other top Washington Mutual... Read Full Story
CONSERVATIVE EXTREMISTS, ZEALOTS AND TRUE BELIEVERS ENJOY SPREADING THE RATHER LAME BROMIDE that suggests where incorporating multiculturalism, tolerance and diversity into the public-education syllabus can only worsen the quality of public education.
Prompting Your Correspondent to ask:
How many states do you know of as have formal public-education policies which discourage (howbeit subtly) the teaching of diversity, tolerance and multiculturalism in the syllabus?
Are such policies... Read Full Story
Learn Me Good Have you ever had to start your life over again? You know, really start it over. If all of a sudden your job – and the market it was based on – crashes, what would you do? You couldn’t just go out and get another job, since none exist in terms of what you are qualified or trained to do. You would really have to start over, from scratch. This is exactly what happened to author John Pearson in 2001. Having graduated with an engineering degree and gotten a good job straight out of... Read Full Story
This last week two incidents highlighted the district and its administrators’ disregard of freedom of speech.
First, 15 8th graders at Liechty Middle School were denied their diplomas when they turned their backs on their graduation keynote speaker, LAUSD Board President Monica Garcia. They were protesting increased class size and teacher layoffs. As they demonstrate in the video, they silently turned their backs. In their seats. Didn’t even stand up. No shouting, chanting, booing, etc... Read Full Story
