A community portal about Istanbul with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Istanbul is Turkey's most populous city, and its cultural and economic center. The city is the capital of the Province of Istanbul. It is located on the Bosphorus strait, and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. Istanbul extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) side of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world which is situated on two continents. Istanbul is also the only city in the world which served as the capital to three different Empires: The Roman Empire (330-395), Byzantine Empire (395-1453) and the Ottoman Empire (1453-1923). In 1923, following the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the capital was moved to Ankara.

Anna of Byzantium was quite interesting and was set in a time period and culture which is not often focused on in both books for young or full-fledged adults. The novel is the story of the Byzantine princess, scholar, and historian Anna Comnena. Since the history books ... Read Full Story

Istanbul is the cultural and financial center of Turkey. Travelers would love this area for its rich heritage and numerous tourist attractions. One such attraction is the magnificent Çiragan Palace. This palace was rebuilt at least five times. This was first constructed in 1855 for Sultan Abdülaziz to live in during his reign. However, the fickle sultan decided to move out after just a few months, criticizing the palace as a damp place to reside in. Ayasofya or St. Sophia is another tourist spot in Istanbul. This used to serve as the triumph of Christianity and also as Byzantium’s symbol. Byzantium and Constantinople were ... Read Full Story
