Most Expensive Watermelon Ever

Watermelons are pretty much the ultimate summer snack. They're cool and refreshing, the perfect topping to a warm beautiful day. But, are they so wonderful that some would pay an outrageous price for these treats?

In Japan, a jumbo black watermelon was auctioned off for $6,100 Friday, making it one of the most expensive watermelons ever sold in the country. Apparently in Japan, melons are considered a luxury.

But if you think $6,100 is expensive for a melon, just last month a pair of "Yubari" cantaloupe melons went for $23,500. Those are some expensive melons!

The black-skinned watermelon sold Friday was a "Densuke" watermelon, only grown on the northern island of Hokkaido. These watermelons usually sell for $188 to $283 at most department stores and supermarkets.

Yes, in Japan, you can apparently buy watermelons at department stores. You can find them between women's bags and fragrances.
