When Dawn Harper captured the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles at last summer's Olympics, many considered it a shock. Yet she knew she could pull it off. With odds-on favorite Lolo Jones clipping a late hurdle and losing her balance, Harper glittered in 12.54 seconds, just ahead of Australia's Sally McLellan. "I felt I was always capable if I focused on myself," the champion said in an interview posted on the USA Track & Field Web site after her Beijing triumph. "But for others, yes (it was a surprise)." It never fails. There is always some serious drama in the news. The latest comes courtesy of another athlete -- Jackie Joyner Kersee and her husband, Robert. According to Belleville News, the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, which is financially strapped, managed to pay her husband's private foundation at least $475,000 in consulting fees and his foundation failed to file federal income statements as required by law.   BEIJING (AP) -- First U.S. medalist in event since Joyner-Kersee Hyleas Fountain became the only American other than Jackie Joyner-Kersee to win an Olympic medal in the heptathlon. The 27-year-old former NCAA champion, in her first Olympics, captured the bronze Saturday night. As she crossed the finish line in the 800 meters, the last of the two-day competition's seven events, Fountain crumbled to the track in a combination of exhaustion and emotion, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. "I'm so excited right now, I don't even have words," she said a short time later. Fountain had 6,619 points, behind the 1-2 Ukrainian ... Read Full Story
