According to Wikipedia.org: Jaco Pastorius was a jazz bassist and composer, notable for his virtuoso technique and fretless bass playing style. His influence on modern electric bass playing is widely recognized and he is considered by many to be the most innovative electric bassist ever. He popularized the fretless electric bass and introduced a textural approach and harmonic sense. Although he was acclaimed as a virtuoso and a musical genius, he also suffered from mental health problems and substance abuse issues that were eventually to be contributory factors to his untimely death.
