Jaime Escalante Dead at 79

Jaime Escalante, the East LA teacher who inspired the 1988 film Stand and Deliver, died at 79 today after a battle with bladder cancer, according to the LA Times. He was an inspirational teacher who challenged his inner-city students to pass a national calculus exam. He made headlines in 1982 when 14 of his Garfield High students passed the AP Calculus exam, and then were accused of cheating.
