5 Possible Same-Sex Couples Who Could Be Explored on 'Once Upon a Time'
Are you excited about this new romance?
There's a new couple in Storybrooke, dearies!
According to Variety, the first same-sex couple on Once Upon a Time will be introduced in a two-hour episode on Sunday, November 15th. The announcement of the show's decision to explore an LGBT relationship sparked some controversy in September, and eventually led to a lot of speculation about who the same-sex couple might be.
With the introduction of Merida this season, some believed that the Brave heroine could be one half of the new couple; however, Amy Mason—the actress who plays Merida—told Entertainment Weekly that her character would not be involved in this new relationship. “Absolutely not. I was actually on Instagram the other day and there were some of the fans discussing that. It’s better just to say what I know about that. But there’s talk within the episode of a past relationship, like you said, but not for my character,” Mason stated in regards to the possibility of a Mulan and Merida romance.
Just like that, Mason's response shattered the dreams of the Brave Warrior shippers. So who exactly will be part of the same-sex couple? Well, we've got a few ideas.
1. Mulan and Red
So apparently Once Upon a Time didn't actually forget about Mulan (Jamie Chung) and Red Riding Hood (Meghan Ory) after all. It's a miracle, really! Both characters were last seen in season 3, and fans have been waiting patiently for their return. These two are the strongest contenders for this new coupling now that Merida is officially out of the picture. Who wouldn't want to see a pairing of the sexy, bad ass warrior and the sassy, somewhat dangerous shape-shifter? Mulan Rouge, for the win!
Once Upon a Time creators, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis discussed how Mulan's plotline would be handled earlier this year. “We’re going to catch up to what she’s been doing for the last couple of years, and we’re going to get a piece of her backstory that we never knew,” Kitsis stated in an interview. For her part, Ruby will be forced into “a dire situation” added Horowitz in the same interview. So, logically it makes sense that Mulan and Red somehow found each other and given Ruby's open-mindedness and exploratory nature, it seems plausible to make her character bisexual. We'll just have to wait and see if this fantasy plays out.
2. Mulan and Aurora
Back in October 2013, it was revealed that Mulan was in love with Princess Aurora (Sarah Bolger). The plot was an unexpected twist since the narrative had initially hinted at Mulan's possible feelings for Prince Phillip (Julian Morris). Mulan and Aurora's perilous journey to find Phillip allowed them to create a lasting, unbreakable bond. Beneath Mulan's desire for Aurora was a true, steadfast friendship, and she was so close to telling Aurora how she really felt.
Ultimately, Mulan left to join Robin Hood's band of Merry Men after discovering that Aurora and Phillip were expecting their first child. That's basically how Mulan became the Lonely Warrior and disappeared into the abyss. Clearly, this unrequited love story was never properly wrapped up and still houses a major fandom. At the 2014 Winter TCA Press Tour, Chung addressed her character's sexuality. "When I was filming that, it was like an ongoing inside joke between Sara and I. Like, 'I secretly really care about you,'” Chung stated. Who knows—maybe things have changed drastically, so there might be a possibility for these two to explore a proper romance? After all, we already know that Mulan would do anything to save Aurora and would always remain by her side. Plus, these two totally fight like a couple.
3. Archie and August
It kind of makes sense when you think about it. Both Archie (Raphael Sbarge) and August (Eion Bailey) have a direct and significant relationship with Marco/Geppetto (Tony Amendola) because they're all from the same fairytale. They also have the whole good guy and reformed bad guy vibe going for them. In the Enchanted Forest, Archie and August are known as Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio respectively, and neither one of them has ever been in a serious relationship (at least not to our knowledge), although there were a few comfy moments between August and Emma ages ago. Plus, turning back into wood definitely left behind some scars for August — and who better to help heal those emotional wounds than Storybrooke's only psychologist, Archie?
4. Emma and Regina
Together Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) and Regina Mills (Lana Parrilla), a.k.a the Evil Queen, form one of the most ardently loved and fantasized about couple from Once Upon a Time. Of course, we're talking about Swan Queen! This couple's loyal fandom has written some seriously steamy and romantic fan fiction. (You can check out a few gems here and here if you are curious.)
Although Swan Queen may seem like a distant possibility on the show itself, there are some reasons why the duo has developed a legion of followers. Emma and Regina went from being sworn enemies to unwilling allies to good friends. Sure, they don't verbally express their sentiments for one another, but Emma did sacrifice her life for Regina when she became the Dark One. That's clearly a whole lot of love — but is it platonic or romantic? Henry's two mothers getting together would sure make things easier for him, and he wouldn't have to split time between two households.
But what about Hook and Robin? The demise of these two relationships would have to be dealt with properly, and it's difficult to imagine this scenario actually playing out. Still, the coupling of a former Evil Queen and the original Savior would be a unique happy ending. Both Emma and Regina are complex and interesting characters who have endured a lot of personal tragedies. They are bound irrevocably because of their son, who ultimately taught them how to believe in the power of light magic, so they could channel the best and truest parts of themselves. If anything, Once Upon a Time has showed us that true love comes in many different forms—just count the number of times Belle has forgiven Rumple! (That's got to be a world record.)
Whether you ship Swan Queen or not, you can't deny the undeniable chemistry (whether that leans into sexual tension is up to the writers to decide) that exists between Emma and Regina.
5. Merlin and Hook
Okay, okay—so this is a totally random and completely illogical pairing, but throwing it out there isn't going to do any harm. This season, Merlin (Elliot Knight) graced our presence and made Once Upon a Time even more delightful to watch. Seriously, the guy is so hot that it's almost painful to watch. Is it the costume? Well, whatever it is, Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) better watch out because Merlin is ready to steal his title as the show's sexiest male lead. After all, these two studs lost their lady loves to dark magic this season—although technically Emma is still somewhere inside the Dark One—and they can bond over their shared tragedies. Clearly, nothing brings people together like heart-wrenching trauma and a big serving of betrayal! We're sure Captain Hook and Emma will be reunited by the end of the season, but that doesn't mean he can't have a little bit of fun before that happens.
