Matt Holliday and the St. Louis Cardinals agreed Tuesday to a $120 million, seven-year contract that is the sport's richest deal of the offseason and the biggest in franchise history.  

Sometimes it takes a really bad contract to put other bad contracts in perspective. Such was the case for me with Jason Marquis and Brad Penny. During the winter meetings, Brad Penny signed a one year, $7.5 million deal with the St. Louis Cardinals. Keep in mind, this is the same Brad Penny who signed a one year $5 million deal the year before with the Red Sox, and rewarded them with a 5.61 ERA in 131 innings before be shown the door. What...

WASHINGTON — Two people familiar with the deal have told The Associated Press that the Washington Nationals and free-agent pitcher Jason Marquis have agreed to a two-year contract, pending a physical. One person said the deal is worth about $15 million. Both spoke to the AP on Monday on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been signed. Mark DeRosa has officially signed with the San Francisco Giants, and Troy Glaus and Joe Thurston both have signed with the Atlanta Braves.  Needless to say, the St. Louis Cardinals are now left with a hole to fill at third base. As Matt Holliday's status remains uncertain, GM John Mozeliak has other targets that he has been rumored to be pursuing. The hottest name linked to the Cardinals appears to be switch-hitting infielder Felipe Lopez...

Would Jason Marquis have been the be-all end-all of the Mets return to glory in 2010? Most likely not. Would he have been a small part of the solution when in tandem with other smart acquisitions? Maybe. Should the fact that Marquis signed with the Nationals give you cause to pull your hair out of your head?It should. Not so much because Marquis going to the Washington Nationals makes them favorites to win the N.L. East ... he doesn't. Not so...
