Jay-Z Nixed Chris Brown's Michael Jackson Tribute at BET Awards
(Getty Images)
Chris Brown didn't get a chance to show off his MJ moves.Chris Brown may not be doing any jailtime after pleading guilty to felony assault against ex-girlfriend Rihanna, but if Jay-Z has his way, Brown won't be seeing much stage time either.
According to The Source, Brown had spent three days in Los Angeles, rehearsing for a tribute to idol Michael Jackson at the BET Awards on Sunday night.
However, Jay-Z, who helped discover Rihanna and served as her mentor, threatened to cancel his own performance if Brown was allowed on stage. BET producers eventually agreed to shut down Brown's tribute.
The reaction over at The Source has been mixed, with some commenters applauding Jay-Z for making a stand:
I for one have to hand it to Jay for sending a powerful message that no matter HOW talented you are, you don’t get a free pass for acting like an animal. Don’t you think Rihanna would have enjoyed going to the Grammys … but oh wait she was in the hospital with a busted face. Others, however, feel that Brown, regardless of past behavoir, should have been let on the stage:
Granted Chris Brown messed up in the worse way but banning him from paying tribute to one of his icons? Its not like it would have been a redemptive performance. No one will let Chris Brown forget what he did, there will be jokes and reminders for years to come. He is the new “Bobby Brown/Ike Turner joke.” But despite all of that he was going pay his respects to Michael Jackson the way he knows how. The night was about Michael, not Hova. What do you think? Should Chris Brown have been allowed on stage or not? Vote here!

I think Jay Z did what he thought was right. Chris Brown on the other hand needs to realize that there some heavy consequences for what he did. Chris Brown needs to redeem himself. Chris save yourself man!!!
That was wrong! The night was about remembering and honoring Michael Jackson. Yes, Chris Brown was wrong for what he did. But the BET Awards that remembered Michael Jackson was not the appropriate forum for Jay-Z use his status to stop another performer from honoring a great man. There is a time and place for everything. Everybody makes mistakes. Are we going to hold this against Chris Brown for the rest of his life?
I'm sorry, but Chris deserved to show his tribute for one of his idols. It was seriously cold and heartless that BET allowed Jay-Z to have his way, we should be moving on from this feud. Mentor or not, Rihanna herself seems to have forgiveness when it comes to her ex. The issue is between them/court, not the rest of the world. I think its sad when someone who's hit a girl on camera: http://tinyurl.com/dhkm5v . Can have so much say over someone wanting to pay homage to his hero Michael Jackson.
I think that Chris Brown should have been allowed to perform at the BET awards. I don't think anybody showed justice to Mike the way that Chris Brown would have. Some of the things stated on the award show were inappropriate and disrespectful and were uncomfortable to watch. The night was not about who's performance was the hottest or who got what award. It was dedicated to the memory of Michael Jackson and BET's producers were wrong to take away someone's opportunity to honor his icon in order to keep one performer in the show. Yes, Chris Brown did his dirt but he is paying for it in the worst of ways and his mistakes had nothing to do with paying respects to Michael Jackson.
there is no excuse for hitting your girlfriend. no one should be condoning it and jay-z sent a strong message about the long-lasting effects of violence. it was the right move. as MJ said: "i'm a lover, not a fighter."
This makes me love Jay-Z more
let's not forget that Jay Z was caught on tape hitting a woman and yet was still given the opportunity to perform.
Being able to perform is a privilege that Chris Brown was denied. I think it was a just denial. No, he's not going to be paying for what he did for the rest of his life. But he does still need to pay for it, and his performance is a privilege I don't think he deserves yet. Jay-Z did send out a powerful message. Somebody had to do it. I wouldn't have Chris Brown singing in my honor. Not yet. He has a lot of community service and spending time w/battered women survivors before he gets his privileges back.
Michael Jackson hated violence and physical abuse. I dont think he would ever have had anything to do with this loathsome character. Jay-Z is looking past the money at whats right.... Having Chris Brown do a tribute to Michael Jackson would be like having OJ Simpson host a womens empowerment seminar..... Some things just are not meant to be....
I can understand why Jay-Z did what he did, and I respect him for it but honestly, I wouldn't have minded watching Chris Brown perform, it definatley would have been a hot performance, better than watchin Lil wayne and Drake sing about f**cking every girl in the world wit pre-teens running across the stage.
Jay-Z could have kept his nappy headed ass at home with beyonce. Neither of their performances were all that good. i would have rather seen Chris Brown perform his Michael Jackson tribute. He would was the best one to represent Michael Jackson's dancing. The dancing that we all remember.
If Jay-Z pulled that b.s. move then I really am disgusted with him. I am in no way a fan of what Chris did to Rhiana, however I believe in forgiveness. As I stated on my blog, Chris Brown is the only one to move like MJ, so he shoulda performed. Did anyone see Chris' MTV B-Day Bash?? That's like Bow-Wow being axed at a JD event!
FOR ALL YOU IDIOTS WHO SAY YOU AGREE WITH JAY-Z U ALL SHOULD CHECK YOUR INFO BC JAY-Z HAS SEVERELY BEAT ONE OF HIS EX- GIRLFRIENDS SO HE HAS NO RIGHT TO SAY WHO CAN OR CAN NOT PERFORM AT ANY EVENT AND ANY WAYS I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY ANYONE IS MAD AT CHRIS WHEN WE HAVE ONLY HEARD ONE SIDE OF THE STORY AND NO ONE KNOWS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED AND SERIOUSLY PPL SINCE WHEN DOES EVERYONE CARE ABOUT RHIANNA I MEAN WHO WAS SHE BEFORE HER AND CHRIS GOT INTO A RELATIONSHIP TOGETHER!!
Everybody makes mistakes, but lets not forget the night was suppose to be dedicated to michael jackson's memory. Michael was a great icon, he sung about love and peace. Jay Z could learn a lesson for Michael. Grow up Jay Z, the night had nothing to do with you and your issues with Chris, By the way ONLY CHRIS BROWN CAN DANCE LIKE MICHAEL JACKSON, MICHAEL JACKSON WAS THE KING OF POP, THAT PRETTY MUCH MAKES CHRIS BROWN THE PRINCE.
i think that it was dumb for jay-z to get chris browns performance cancelled dnt kno body even like u like that jay so who cares if you would have cancelled your performance. i dnt think no one cared about or admired micheal jackson more than chris brown it just breaks my heart because that night was supposed to be for micheal and chris should have been der to pay his last respects to da man and jay-z should have done something else or nothing at all, the situation had nothing to do wit u jay-z, and we dnt even kno what rihanna did to make chris do that erbody kno a lil bit bout what happened in chris's life and maybe that night rihanna just triggered that anger that chris had built up and he just couldnt control his self erbody makes mistakes and should most definately get a second chance... i still love chris to death and always will long after he is chris brown the celebrity
