Jay-Z (real name Shawn Corey Carter, born December 4, 1969) is an American rapper and current president and CEO of Def Jam and Roc-A-Fella Records. he co-owns The 40/40 Club, and is a part owner of the New Jersey Nets NBA team. He has been one of the most successful American rappers of the past decade. In 2006, an MTV list named him the "Greatest MC Of All Time." He married singer Beyonce Knowles in 2008. (Getty Images)more pics »As the Phillies and the Yankees faced off last night in Game 2 of the World Series, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys began the evening with a true spectacle. The musicians took the field first to perform their latest hit "Empire State of Mind," wowing the crowd.

As People.com reports, Jay-Z wore his signature Yankees baseball hat and jacket (sorry, Phillies, but no surprises there) and Alicia manned the piano in an unbiased pink and back ensemble. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said of the song, "I think it almost seems like it's the anthem for New York right now. I got an opportunity to get to know Jay-Z throughout the years and he's very, very talented doing a lot of things. But he knows what he's doing, so I think New York has kind of embraced that song."

Jay-Z said in a statement before the event that he was "honored" to be performing at Yankee Stadium. "As a die-hard Yankees fan, I'm honored to perform a song that celebrates the greatness of New York in one of our city's most important landmarks, Yankee Stadium," he said.
