(AP) – The Placerville lawyer who was replaced as kidnapping suspect Nancy Garrido’s defense lawyer says he never considered trying to sell her story as part of a book deal and that Garrido still wants him to represent her. In an appeals court filing made public Tuesday, Gilbert Maines disputed the alleged conflict of interest that led El Dorado Superior Court Judge Douglas Phimister to take him off the case earlier this month. The California convicted rapist accused of kidnapping an 11-year-old girl and imprisoning her in his backyard for 18 years has issued a letter of apology from his jail cell, reports said Friday. Phillip Garrido, who is accused of kidnapping and raping Jaycee Dugard, sent a letter to Sacramento television station KCRA to "apologize to every human being for what has taken place," reports said. A spokeswoman for Jaycee Dugard says only Dugard and her family should decide when and if a film is made based on the 18 years she spent with the man charged with kidnapping her. In a letter Sacramento, Calif., television station KCRA received Thursday, Phillip Garrido says he wants to "apologize to every human being for what has taken place." The man accused of kidnapping Jaycee Dugard and holding her captive for 18 years was improperly supervised during the 10 years he was under the jurisdiction of California parole authorities. So says the California inspector general, who documented his findings in a report released last week. Dugard was 11 and living in South Lake Tahoe when, police say, she was kidnapped by Phillip Garrido in 1991.
