Jerramy Stevens Sentenced to 12 Days in Jail, Won’t Serve During Season
Filed under: Buccaneers, NFL Police Blotter, Tampa Bay
Buccaneers tight end Jerramy Stevens has been sentenced to 12 days in jail for drunk driving and other traffic violations, but he won’t have to serve the sentence during the football season, as he’ll be free pending his appeal, and that appeal will last at least into February.
Stevens has played in all four games for the Bucs this season, but he has yet to catch a pass. The NFL is forcing Stevens to seek substance-abuse treatment with a medical doctor, and his lawyer says of that treatment, “He has to do it if he wants to play, and he is doing it.” That’s not an encouraging statement, as substance-abuse treatment generally works a lot better if the person receiving the treatment is going through it because he genuinely wants to, rather than because he thinks “he has to do it.”
Overall, it seems like an awfully sweet deal for a guy who drove with a 0.204 blood-alcohol level, and who had had multiple previous driving-related offenses. I guess he’ll have to kill someone before he faces any significant punishment.
