Jerry Falwell is nothing if not controversial. This portal keeps track of the lively news, opinions, debates, discussions about or derived from Falwell and his preachings.

Falwell, a Virginia native and Baptist minister, fathered the "Moral Majority" movement that grew up in the 1980s. Falwell became a public figure through his TV show, the 700 club, with a style that gives us that old time Bible thumping.

Most known for for stances against drugs, promiscuity, Gay Rights and the like, Falwell has also supported the talk by founding organizations to help young pregnant women and men with drug and alcohol related problems.

Jerry Falwell has often been on the block for putting his foot in his mouth, and then trying to extract it. Most famous example, a speech in which he accused "the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians" for helping 9/11 happen. Then came out later the same day and apologized.

Though a health crisis in 2005 has slowed him down some, he's still on the news radar and this portal will pick it up when it happens.

Rev. Jerry Falwell may be dead, but his legacy still lives on at Liberty University and the divisiveness emanating from his ideology continues. The school has decided to revoke recognition of the College Democrats' chapter on its campus because the group "stood against the moral principles" held by the school and could no longer be sanctioned, according to the Lynchburg News & Advance . What a load of crap. Is this school in a communist country or is it in a democracy? This is clearly a case of censorship. The school's decision is deeply troubling and very problematic because they did not revoke recognition ... Read Full Story

Unfortunately, parts of Virginia have found themselves home to some of the worse gay-haters and Christianist whack jobs around: Virginia Beach has the dubious distinction of being home to Pat Robertson's Regent University, numerous ultra conservative groups are based in the western Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., and then there's Jerry Falwell's Liberty University in Lynchburg . Of course, the name Liberty University is ironic since its founder and current leadership were/are all about depriving liberty and rights to those who do not subscribe to their intolerant, unloving form of alleged Christianity. While overall Virginia is trending blue, these pockets of lunacy continue to ... Read Full Story

It has not been a brilliant week for the clergy. First, a judge announced that a church deacon had to stand trial over a bit of testicular bother in a bar last June: PDT Oklahoma City (AP) – A judge ordered a man Wednesday to stand trial on a felony assault charge after a bar confrontation that escalated from football trash-talking to a near castration. Allen Michael Beckett, 54, will be tried on a charge of aggravated assault and battery, Special Judge D. Fred Doak ruled. Beckett, a federal auditor and church deacon, is accused of tearing the scrotum of Brian Christopher Thomas, 35, ... Read Full Story

The nuns taught me never to speak ill of the dead, so originally I thought it best to remain silent on this one. But to be honest, and at the risk of offending those who invariably arise to decry those who take pleasure in the death of a fellow human being, I think it fair to say the world is a better place with Jerry Falwell no longer a part of it. He went out the same way he lived--fat and disgusting. Perhaps God finally got tired of having the guy speak for him. Some of Falwell's more thought provoking ideas: "AIDS is not ... Read Full Story

Well, Happy Halloween everyone. We are on the road this year so Kristin and the boys will have to get all dressed up and go out without me. I hate missing doing things with the kids, but I know that they will have fun tonight. I plan on dressing up as someone on a tour who needs a shower and a little more sleep. Thanks to everyone who commented and contributed to the conversation on the previous post. It fascinates me how many different views there are. Turns out there’s no real way to unite religion and politics huh? I do appreciate all the ... Read Full Story

It was ten years ago that Rev. Jerry Falwell launched his personal fatwa against the evils of the Teletubbies, (especially that colourfully dressed Tinky Winky), who he suggested was a poor role model. The good Reverend (well not in everyone's opinion we guess) managed to make Teletubbie bashing a growth industry, until some of the fall out of some high profile scandals of televangelism took over the headlines, making many of his stands the...

Liberty Unbound: How Jerry Falwell's ambitious sons have led the Lynchburg university to financial success and a burgeoning student body. (John W. Kennedy, 9/10/2009, Christianity Today) The late Falwell established Liberty in 1971 as a small fundamentalist Baptist Bible college. While students are still required to take Bible, theology, and evangelism courses—and to attend chapel services three times a week—the school aims to reposition...
