If Nick Glasgow were white, he would have a nearly 90 percent chance of finding a matching bone marrow donor who could cure his leukemia. But because the 28-year-old bodybuilder is one-quarter Japanese, his doctor warned him the outlook was grim. Glasgow's background would make it almost impossible to find a match, which usually comes from a patient's own ethnic group. The doctor "didn't say it was slim-to-none. He didn't say it would be hard. He said 'zero chance,'" Glasgow's mother, Carole Wiegand, recalled with tears in her eyes. "When Nick heard that, it sent him plummeting." At a time when the number of ... Read Full Story

Little Jasmina Anema 's mom will have a very happy Mother's Day on Sunday. You see, 6 year old New Yorker, Jasmina, is fighting a rare and very deadly form of leukemia. The good news is that a widespread public appeal for African Americans to register as bone marrow donors worked. Thousands were tested and the results have turned up not one, but two likely bone marrow matched donors, who may give Jasmina what she needs to knockout the disease once and for all: "I am just thrilled," Theodora Anema, Jasmina's mother said Tuesday. "I've never lost hope. I always expected a miracle, and ... Read Full Story

Bone marrow donors are pretty easy to find for 90% of the population, but the same cannot be said for those of mixed ancestry. According to the National Marrow Donor Program , the number of multiracial Americans is rising, but very few of the donors on the national bone-marrow registry are of mixed race. More diverse donors for patients suffering from leukemia, lymphoma, and other diseases are being sought. People tend to find matches from their own ethnic group, so people of mixed ancestry basically need donors from their own, unique “ethnic group” which can only be hoped to be found in mixed ancestral ... I am sharing this information that I found at Alas a Blog , who actually got it from a friend but it is important all the same. 28-year-old Nick Glasgow was just diagnosed with leukemia and has only weeks-to-months to live. He desperately needs a bone marrow donor but he’s a quarter-Japanese, which is a difficult racial mix for finding matching donors. I know several people with interesting mixed-Asian heritage and I hope one of us might be able to help–if not Nick then someone else. You can read about Nick’s situation and the difficulty involved with finding donors of mixed ethnicities , then ... Read Full Story

It wasn’t too long ago when I discussed the issue of health care acknowledging the biracial community. And ever since, I’ve noticed there are many discussions on some of the new changes. One of the most intriguing is the one regarding bone marrow donors. The increasing population of biracial people has made it more difficult to for bone marrow matching among biracial patients. It was never a thought before, but it makes total sense. Two year old Eve has acute leukemia and is in urgent need of a donor so she can receive the transplant that can save her life. So far, no match has been found. Tissue type is inherited, like eye or hair color. Eve’s best chance of finding a genetic match lies with donors of Eastern European Jewish descent, but volunteers of all backgrounds are encouraged to join the donor registry. The drive for Eve is different than most others. Its organizers include several Cleveland residents who themselves have donated bone marrow to patients in need. They felt so passionate about what they did for ... Read Full Story
