Jill Leovy Puts a Face on LA Homicide with The Homicide Report

Jill Leovy, a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times has made LA homicide a little more personal. In conjunction with the LA Times, Leovy has created The Homicide Report, a blog which attempts to record every homicide in Los Angeles County.

Started in January 2007, the blog recorded 845 names by year's end. On average, three people a day are killed in LA County, most of them die anonymously. Only the notable homicides are reported on by the LA Times. The drive by shootings, school shootings and other newsworthy deaths.

Leovy's cause was to delve deeper into the staggering homicide numbers, and to show the toll homicide is taking on LA communities.

In a short span of time, the blog became a sort of memorial for those that had passed. Although many entries were as short as a sentence, family members and those that knew the deceased personally would leave messages on the blog, showing the total impact of a single homicide.

The Homicide report is still updated daily, with the intent of insuring that no homicide goes unnoticed.
