Jim Carroll , best known for his autobiographical book later adapted for film, the Basketball Diaries , died Friday of a heart attack in his Manhattan apartment. He was 60 years old. Jim Carroll, punk rock poet and author of The Basketball Diaries , has died. He was 60. Jim Carroll (August 1, 1950-September 11, 2009) was an author, poet, autobiographer, and punk musician. Carroll is best known for his 1978 novel The Basketball Diaries, which was made into a movie in 1995 starring Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm not one who usually goes for the books on tape sort of thing, but hearing Mr. Carroll himself reading this is really cool. His voice is unmistakable.
