It seems stupidly arrogant and self-defeating for a sports writer to ridicule his readers, to tell them in so many words that they’re a bunch of dopes. Why would you want to knock the people you hope will read your column? But there he was, David Shoalts of The Globe and Mail, sneering at the Toronto Maple Leaf fans and heaping scorn on them from a high place. Shoalts explained in his Saturday column that “your agent” – that’s him – had been cooped up at home for two days and, therefore, was able to put his ear to the pulse of “Leafs Nation” ... It appears the on-ice futility is finally starting to catch up with the Toronto Maple Leafs, cashbox kings of the NHL. For the first time since moving into the Air Canada Centre 10 years ago, the NHL’s richest franchise confirms that it has been unable to lease an unspecified number of the facility’s 152 luxury suites for Leafs games this season. Yet the team does not believe this is the first sign that fans are growing weary of the product. “We’re certainly aware of the tipping point theory,” Richard Peddie, president and chief executive officer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns the ... The circulating online pictures of 19-year-old Jiri Tlusty could be a big break for this young Toronto Maple Leaf's player. Carefully managed, his new-found publicity can create successes that Hollywood is very much aware of. Think about Paris Hilton's sex tape or Vanessa Hudgen's nude photo scandal. So far Jiri has apologised for his sexually provocative, full-frontal, cell phone pictures, which he sent to someone he met online. They were prominently displayed on a Canadian blog (http://isthishappening.typepad.com ) but were removed after Jiri's lawyer threatened legal action. However, they probably exist in cyberspace -- and the difficulty finding them is making Jiri Tlusty even ... Read Full Story

Right about now, there are a few hundred Toronto Maple Leafs fans gasping for air. Tie Domi? The greatest Leaf of all time? Are you nuts? There are numerous players in the annals of Toronto Maple Leafs  lore who are perhaps deserving of the moniker. It depends in large part, I suppose, on your own personal criteria. For example, my criteria obviously does not include points, for the most part. To me, Domi was perhaps the greatest Toronto...

The Canes are hoping to having Jiri Tlusty's immigration issues cleared up by today. The forward came to the Canes in a Dec. 3 trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs and was assigned to Albany (AHL). He was called up last week from River Rats and played in games Friday in Washington and Saturday in Ottawa, scoring against the Caps on his first shift with the Hurricanes. According to Brian Tatum, the director of team operations, Tlusty had a...

Photo by designwallah. Taken on the northwest corner of Dundas Street West and University Avenue. A few months ago, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment—MLSE—illegally spray-painted the Toronto Maple Leafs logo along with the phrase "Spirit is Everything" on sidewalks around the city. Not to be outdone, The Zan Tabak Herald, a Toronto Raptors blog, responded with its own snarky tag that said "We Prefer Winning." (Which might have made...

In the 1980’s the Toronto Maple Leafs apparently hired a new coach whose name was Win Sumsoon. Many figured, as they were unsure of the spelling, that perhaps the Leafs had hired an unknown. Those adept at puzzles, however, got the joke and spread the news.  In 2009 the Leafs are the punch line of jokes again, but this time around “Win some soon” is the sentiment, not the coach. Despite sporting the NHL’s worst point total, a sense of...
