It was both easy and difficult, this year, to decide on The Times Briton of the Year. It was easy in the sense that the Editor chose Joanna Lumley as the winner as soon as she was suggested as a candidate. Yet it was difficult in the sense that a host of other candidates were considered and rejected first.  

The ranks of those that would bend the Government to their will are deep and wide. Lobbyists, opposition politicians, campaigners, protest groups and, yes, newspapers.
