Here is an excerpt: April 15, 2007 -- She´s the only female "American Idol" contestant who goes home after singing and does her homework. Seventeen-year-old Jordin Sparks gave up school to embark on the most ambitious journey of her life. The Staten Island native who was raised in Glendale, Ariz., is capitalizing on the talents she developed while singing with the Valley Youth Center in Phoenix. Her mother Jodi Sparks graduated from Greenway High School in 1987, and her father Phillippi Sparks graduated from Maryvale High School the same year and went on to play football at Arizona State University. Phillippi eventually went on to go pro.
