He began his career as a part of a standup comedy act with his brother Maury. He was the straight man for the Rat Pack performances in Las Vegas in the 1960s, and also wrote much of the material they performed on stage. With the death of Frank Sinatra on May 14, 1998, he is now the last surviving member of the Rat Pack.

Joey Bishop, the deadpan comedian, TV host and last of the super-hip team of performers known as the Rat Pack, led by Frank Sinatra, has died at age 89, his publicist said on Thursday. Bishop, born Joseph Abraham Gottlieb on February 3, 1918, in the Bronx, died on Wednesday night at his home in Newport Beach, south of Los Angeles, following an illness of several months, publicist Warren Cowan said. Although not as widely appreciated, it was Bishop with his deadpan delivery, dead-on timing and bottomless pit of jokes, who was "the hub of the big wheel," according to Rat Pack leader Sinatra himself. Even as litigation with his former Rat Pack tribute show partners heats up, comedian Sandy Hackett today announced the launch of a new Rat Pack show at the Sahara hotel-casino in Las Vegas. Hackett, son of the late entertainer Buddy Hackett, said he will perform in the Sahara Congo Room as Joey Bishop in "Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack Show," set to open just before Thanksgiving.
