Chestnut, a San Jose, Calif. native, said he was slow last year, though he was confident in his ability to win.

Last year, Chestnut took the win with 68 hot dogs, a record, so he was down 14 dogs today.

"I came out and knew what I had to do," he said after the competition (via Seattlepi.com ). "I was slower than I wanted to be."

What was almost as exciting as his record-breaking win was the fact that rival Takeru Kobayashi, who was a 6-time champ, was not supposed to be at the event because of some kind of contract dispute, but instead came up on stage after Chestnut's win and wound up getting arrested for his refusal to get down. He was carted off by NYPD shortly following the ordeal.

Chestnut didn't seem phased, and will likely proudly take the stage next year, for a shot at a 5 championships in a row.
