Detroit scored four times early in the first period and Niklas Kronwall had two power-play goals and an assist to lift the Red Wings past the Columbus Blue Jackets 9-1 on Wednesday night. Justin Abdelkader tallied two late goals, Dan Cleary, Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi each had a goal and assist, and Kris Draper and Ville Leino also scored for Detroit, which despite major injuries to several key players and a recent loss to lowly Toronto are 5-1-1 in their last seven games. Swedish star Johan Franzen will be out four months with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, the Detroit Red Wings announced. The 29-year-old Franzen suffered the injury to his left knee Thursday in the Red Wings' 3-2 win over Chicago. It was the first win of the new season for the Red Wings. Franzen was chosen 97th overall in the 2004 NHL entry draft by Detroit. Franzen, who goes by the nickname "The Mule", won a Stanley Cup with Detroit in 2008 and a gold medal with Sweden at the 2006 World Championships. He had 34 goals in 71 games last season ... This, for some reason, reminds me of a summer conversation I had with a general manager in which I suggested that I didn’t see the distinction between Henrik Zetterberg’s heavily front-loaded long-term contract that received the NHL’s blessing and Marian Hossa’s, Chris Pronger’s and Roberto Luongo’s similar deals that are under league investigation. “Ah, but there’s a significant difference and I’m surprised you don’t see it,” the GM said. “Zetterberg plays for the Red Wings.” So then, knee injury to a Red Wing, five games; brain injury to a Ranger, three games.
