Like greased lightning, Olivia Newton-John’s boyfriend may have gone, gone, gone. Former cameraman Patrick McDermott disappeared in 2005 and was believed to have drowned at sea. But a private investigator hired by “Dateline NBC” may have proof that he, in fact, faked his own death.

Investigator Philip Klein suspects that McDermott left to escape debts and give his son access to a $100,000 life insurance policy.

Newton-John dated McDermott for nine years and was devastated at the time. She has since moved on, marrying natural-health businessman John Easterling in March 2008.

Klein told Dateline that the singer regularly visits his Web site for updates on McDermott, who has been sighted nearly 20 times along the Mexican and South American coastline.
