The National Enquirer is reporting that John Edwards has told his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, that he is the father of Rielle Hunter's child, the woman with whom he admitted to having an extramarital affair. According to the Enquirer, Edwards made the admission to prevent Hunter from going public with the information. From the write-up:
The ex-senator sprang into action when he saw how upset Rielle had become over Elizabeth's forthcoming book, Resilience: Reflections on the Burdens and Gifts of Facing Life's Adversities, which will be published in May.
"Rielle has become extremely edgy, and John's been afraid she might go public before Elizabeth's book comes out so she can put her story out there first," the close source told the Enquirer.
Normally, we'd just say this is almost assuredly not true, but the Enquirer was the paper that broke the story of Edward's affair with Rielle Hunter, sending an Enquirer reporter to the hotel where Edwards was having a 3 a.m. rendezvous with Hunter and causing the one-time vice-presidential candidate to try to run away into a "nearby restroom." So the tabloid has a certain track record when it comes to busting John Edwards.
Still, we'd place even money on this story being faker than a politician's smile. One of Edward's campaign workers, Andrew Young, has admitted to being the father of Hunter's child, while Hunter herself refused to get a DNA test to prove that child is Edward's.
