John Piper on Trayvon Martin, Race, and the Gospel

By Kisbahlayish on  From musicalsoulfood.com
Racial tensions continue to rise just as I prepare to go to New York next week to talk with Anthony Bradley and Tim Keller about race and the Christian. I watched a video on Wednesday of an African American pastor who said that recently he was denied service at a convenience store. The woman behind the counter said, "We don't serve your kind." That's 2012 not 1962.   Do You Like this Article? Then Like Us on Facebook.  From Miami to New York to the Twin Cities frustration over the...Read Full Story

John Piper and Jamal Bryant on Obama's Support of Same-Sex Marriage

By Kisbahlayish on  From musicalsoulfood.com
John Piper's Desiring God ministry posted an excerpt from a 2011 post written by the pastor on marriage in light of the news: "In God's eyes, there simply is no such thing as so-called gay marriage. It does not exist. It cannot be made to exist."   Do You Like this Article? Then Like Us on Facebook.  Pastor Jamal Bryant of Empowerment Temple in Washington, D.C., wrote: "For the church to be against same sex marriage doesn't make it bashing or homophobic! I have gay people in my church...Read Full Story

The Cross = My Infinite Worth? (John Piper)

By Kirk Miller on  From kirkmillerblog.wordpress.com
Today I was reading in The Supremacy of God in Preaching by John Piper and I ran across the paragraph below. This paragraph really seems to be just a side thought in Piper’s argument, but nonetheless, it caught my attention. Read it for yourself: It horribly skews the meaning of the cross when contemporary prophets of self-esteem say that the cross is a witness to my infinite worth, since God was willing to pay such a high price to get me. The biblical perspective is that the cross is a...Read Full Story

John Piper on “Limited” Atonement

By Kirk Miller on  From kirkmillerblog.wordpress.com
This is a video of what I am assuming is an excerpt from a sermon by John Piper. In this excerpt Piper explains in very understandable language what is in many senses the essential difference between limited atonement (the Calvinistic view) and unlimited/universal atonement (the Arminian view)–two dominant views on the extent of the atonement. He clarifies what, in my opinion, are rather inappropriate terms (limited, unlimited, universal, etc.). See also Shai Linne’s song “Limited Atonement...Read Full Story

Ben Witherington on John Piper and Masculine Christianity

By Allan R. Bevere on  From allanbevere.com
From Ben's Blog, The Bible and Culture: ...let's start with the orthodox Christian point that GOD IS NEITHER MALE NOR FEMALE IN THE DIVINE NATURE. The Bible is clear enough that God is 'spirit', not flesh and gender is always a manifestation of flesh. In the book that Laura Ice and I wrote some time ago, entitled The Shadow of the Almighty we made reasonably clear that: 1) there are plenty of both masculine and feminine images and metaphors applied to God in the Bible; 2) that...Read Full Story

In Defense of Rick Warren?

By tcr on  From newleaven.com
Over at Parchment & Pen, C. Michael Patton calls on fellow believers to give Rick Warren a break. Mr. Patton informs his readers as to the why of his post on Warren: “Because I read a blog post that was warning people about Warren and, simply put, it hurt to read.” After opening with a admission of reading Warren’s writings but haven’t been keeping up with him lately, Patton continues, I have always scratched my head in confusion as so many Christians want to burn him at the stake. Well, I...Read Full Story

The Legacy of RC Sproul and John Piper

By tcr on  From newleaven.com
Famed theo-blogger Justin Taylor has crafted a fine piece on the legacy of RC Sproul and John Piper over at the Ligionier Ministries Blog.  Here’s an excerpt: “The differences between R. C. Sproul and John Piper are easily discerned, even for the casual observer. I’m tempted to enumerate some of them, but it will be more fruitful to focus on the common threads that tie together their remarkable ministries. Both men became Calvinists during seminary, as their resistance was overcome by God...Read Full Story

Warren to Speak at Piper’s Conference: No April Fool’s

By tcr on  From newleaven.com
Perhaps a Rick Warren speaking at John Piper’s Desiring God Conference comes as a surprise to many.  But when John MacArthur threw Mark Driscoll under the bus, John Piper still embraced the latter. So what is so surprising for John Piper, a hard-nosed Calvinist, to invite Rick Warren, a religious pragmatist, to speak at his Conference? A list of the speakers: * Al Mohler – “The Way the World Thinks: Meeting the Natural Mind in the Mirror and in the Market Place” * Rick Warren – “Thinking...Read Full Story
