John Rhys-Davies news, related photos and videos, and reviews of John Rhys-Davies performances. According to Wikipedia: John Rhys-Davies is a Welsh actor. Although he has dozens of films to his credit, Rhys-Davies is probably best known for portraying Professor Maximillian Arturo in the TV series Sliders and for his characters in the two blockbuster film series: Sallah in the Indiana Jones films, and the dwarf Gimli in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. He also voiced "Man Ray" in the "Spongebob Squarepants" television series. He is known as a character actor and generally plays minor but interesting roles.

John-Rhys Davies Rules Out 'Hobbit' Return

We don't yet know who exactly will be in The Hobbit, but we know one actor who won't: John Rhys-Davies aka Gimli the dwarf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy tells Empire he will not be returning to Middle Earth for the new series of films.

Of course, Gimli isn't exactly in the original Hobbit but the character's father, Gloin, does appear in the book. Nevertheless, there were discussions to bring the color Rhy-Davies back, presumably to play Gloin. "I've already been asked and to be honest with you, I wouldn't. I have already completely ruled it out," the actor said.

"There's a sentimental part of me that would love to be involved again. Really I am not sure my face can take that sort of punishment any more," Rhys-Davis added, referring to the hours in he make-up chair before laying out the conditions under which he would return.

"It was just a gentle 'What would you feel about putting it on again?' But no. I'd be interested in trying to create a different type of persona within...the thing. That is challenging as an actor. I'd really prefer to play something quite different. Maybe an Elf. They've got a different set of problems with The Hobbit because you've got 13 dwarves, a whole band of them... You're trying to represent a whole race...You're trying to do for dwarves what The Lord of the Rings did for hobbits."

So mark him off the list, but that's a good reminder that we have to start getting more casting news sooner than later. The production is still expected to begin next spring and run a little over a year, with Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson putting together two films at once.
