Saint John Neumann in repose at the National Shrine of Saint John Neumann, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania January 5th is one of those dates that will always have a special significance for me. Like December 7th when the world recalls the attack on Pearl Harbor, or September 11, the day of the terrorist attacks that launched this country into a global campaign towards the eradication of terrorism, January 5th is a significant date when I recall the memory of Saint John Neumann, the Bishop of Philadelphia that died on this date in 1860. At the time of his death John Neumann, the German-born prelate was considered ... Read Full Story

I came across this copy of the newspaper for the then Bishop Neumann High School from January 1977. It is really fitting to remember with great fondness the excitement and accomplishment we felt as students of Bishop Neumann High School when Pope Paul VI declared his intention to canonize Philadelphia's John Neumann as a saint in 1978. Traditionally I write about different aspects of Gray's Ferry that are poignant examples of the historical legacy that enclave of Philadelphia contributed to our view of the South Philadelphia world. Well, quite honestly, the Catholic educational experience of Saint Gabriel, Saint Anthony, King of Peace, St.Aloysius and ... Read Full Story

Her beauty and poise granted her access to circles which included Sonny Bono, who introduced her to Austrian Baron John von Neumann -- the first importer of Volkswagens to ... Read Full Story

For Philadelphia Catholics today is especially an important event...the celebration of the life and the death of John Neumann, the Bishop of Philadelphia thatwas destined to be the first male canonized American saint. However, the Diocese of Philadelphia in John Neumann's day was composed of most of the State of Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and parts of Maryland and Delaware. Today this area is divided into multiple dioceses and archdioceses and even provinces assigned to different Archbishops. We take for granted often times the accomplishments of the "Little Bishp." However during his lifetime Bishop Neumann's work and ministry was often beset with troubles from ... Read Full Story

Not Einstein. Not Freud. Not Tesla.
