Johnny Depp May Have Starred in Michael Mann's Movie, But He's Not a Huge Fan

Johnny Depp may be a huge fan of waiters (he reportedly left a $4,000 tip at a Chicago steak house recently), but he's not so much a fan of director Michael Mann. In fact, according to an article up today at the Daily Beast, he was so put off by Mann's directing style that by the end of shooting Public Enemies, he was barely speaking to him.

The article is look at why Mann's star may be on the wane in Hollywood due to cost overruns, poor box office,  and his perceived difficulty to work with. Damning examples include such lax security on the set of Miami Vice that a shooting occurred on set in the Domincan Republic, causing Jamie Foxx to refuse to film further outside the U.S. A seperate incident has Mann continuining to shoot in Miami even as Hurricane Katrina drew dangerously near.

In the midst of all this, writer Kim Masters slips in the gossip of on-set trouble between Mann and his star:
Johnny Depp disliked Mann’s chaotic style of filmmaking to the point that he ultimately refused to speak to the director. Universal executive Dylan Clark (who has subsequently resigned to take another position) was forced to act as go-between. To add one bit of evidence to cool feelings between the two, in the multiple photo galleries we have in our system of Depp and Mann arriving at various premeries for Public Enemies, you can see both posing with many of the other actors in the movie, but none of the director and his lead actor posing together.
