The 49′ers and former Steelers offensive tackle Marvel Smith have come to terms on a deal. The free agent signed a multiyear deal on Friday that reports say could pay him up to $10 mil if he can stay on the field. The San Francisco 49ers have finally released injury-plagued offensive tackle Jonas Jennings. Jennings was the first major free agent signing of former coach Mike Nolan's tenure in 2005, but the $36 million lineman played in just 23 of the 49ers' 64 games, finishing three of his four seasons on injured reserve. Although signed to be the 49ers' left tackle, he missed all but three games of his first season in San Francisco with shoulder injuries. The San Francisco 49ers have signed tackle Marvel Smith to a two-year contract worth $10.5 million. To make room for Smith, the Niners cut tackle Jonas Jennings. In his four seasons with the Niners, Jennings started only 23 (out of a possible 64) games. " I am blessed with the opportunity the Niners have given me to come back home and play," said Smith, an Oakland native. An eight-year veteran, Jennings, 31, spent the past four seasons with the 49ers, appearing in just 23 games during that span. He was limited to five games or fewer in three of the four seasons.
