GM Mozeliak a Let Down for Cards
St. Louis will name interim General Manager John Mozeliak the new GM at a press conference today.
This is a big dissapointment for St. Louis. Chris Antonetti, the Cards' first choice, turned them down after Indians' (for whom Antonetti currently works) owner Paul Dolan made it "impossible to leave". I wonder if he did it like this guy...
Antonetti is one of the most heralded up-and-comers among future GMs. He's a stats guy who knows the game and has helped turn the Indians into one of the best-run organizations in baseball. With Antonetti at the helm, Cards fans wouldn't have to worry about whether St. Louis would throw money away on "scrappy" (read: unproductive) guys like David Eckstein or off the scrap-heap stopgaps like Juan Encarnacion or (here's to hoping this isn't prophetic) Geoff Jenkins.
We're not sure what Mozeliak will do. He's worked with the scouting department, so perhaps he'll focus more on improving the farm system, which would be a good first move. He might do a great job. He might. The feeling with Antonetti, though, is that he will do a great job. But in Cleveland, not in St. Louis.
